I live in the UK but also spend some time each year in Granada province in Spain.
I usually starts with a visual cue – a view, light falling on an object, land, water, and often involving movement – especially the human body in motion, but perhaps the wind in the trees, falling rain. I’m particularly drawn to the mysterious movement of a body of water.
The way it makes me feel, usually delighted, is the inspiration. Delight makes energetic paintings that often develop quickly. But also sometimes darker emotions, inspire pieces that take much longer to develop as I process those feeling when I can, a little at a time, sometimes over years.
I also write a little and love it when words and images arrive together in my mind. These are often the pieces to which I have the strongest attachment.
